Practical Instruction in the Arts and Sciences of Making Money

Editor/Publisher:  J.F. (Jim) Straw

AUGUST 2003

 Greetings & Salutations:

Would YOU do me a favor? -- It will be in your best interest.

I thought I knew everything about "direct selling" until I got started on the Internet - but - as JOHN WOODEN said,

"It's what you learn after you know everything that counts."

What I learned ... after I thought I knew everything ... was that I did know "Everything I needed to know" I just hadn't adopted & adapted it to my Internet Marketing.

In the words of the second-century scholar; Simon Ben Azzai ...

"In seeking wisdom thou art wise; in imagining that thou has attained it thou art a fool."

Over the past 30 years, I have (really) sold over $250 Million worth of products and services -- everything from Beauty Supplies to Heavy Equipment ... Burglar Alarms to Sleeping Bags ... Fishing Lures to Women's Wigs ... Automobiles to Wheelchairs ... Seafood to Investment Opportunities ... Consulting Services to "How-To" Courses - all by mailorder.

For the past 15 years, I have told hundreds (maybe even thousands) of people wanting to get into mailorder or Internet marketing that ...

"If I didn't already have the line of information products I've developed over the past 30 years ... if I had to do it all over again ... I would never create my own products. -- I would simply sell other people's products and eliminate the hassles of production, fulfillment, inventory control, and other costs that eat away at profits."

In other words, I would only become an affiliate for other people's products and services.   (My life would be a lot simpler.)

Think about it!

How much is a warehouse filled with one million (1,000,000) $5 widgets worth? -- Five million dollars? -- NOPE! -- Nothing, if you don't sell them.  But, they DO have a number of "costs" associated with them. Costs you have to pay, even if you never sell one.  (Just think how much you would have to pay in rent for the warehouse each month alone.)

IF ... over the past 30 years ... I had ONLY sold other people's products and services, I would have; without doubt, still sold over $250 Million worth - BUT - because my overhead would have been greatly reduced, I would have made a lot more money.

Up until about 4 months ago, I only sold MY information products to you ... my e-Letter subscribers.

I thought, because you bought "how to" information about Home Based Businesses, Stock Market Investing, Finder's Fees, Mailorder, Exporting and Real Estate Options, you wouldn't buy information about Internet Marketing and other business subjects - BUT - you do. -- As I had discovered, many, many years ago (but forgot; again) ... an "how to" information buyer is an "how to" information buyer.  Simply because they know that any business application, method, or concept can be adopted and adapted to any business they happen to be involved in.  (Even I buy from $3,000 to $5,000 worth of "how to" information every year and add it to my personal library ... just so I can know.) -- SO ...

I signed-up as an affiliate for some info-products that I had fully read and reviewed and found to have "real" value for you ... "real" good stuff; not the majority of crap. -- I make it a hard, fast rule that I never try to sell anything that I, personally, don't find real value in.

Guess what? -- Within 3 months, I was making a few thousand extra dollars each week in affiliate commissions.

As many of you who have asked know, I have refused to write about "how to make money on the Internet" for the past 3 years. -- Why? -- Because, although I have made a bundle of money on the Internet, I never write about a subject until I have found a way that can be duplicated by the people who read what I have written.

With my success with affiliate programs ... which is relatively easy to duplicate ... I decided to write a report on  "how to" make money as an affiliate marketer. -- Believe me, it is quite a bit different from anything you have ever read on the subject. -- BUT ...

Rather than just tell you what I have done and how you can do it using the same methods ...

I need your help!

As with this e-Letter, in order to make my report responsive to YOUR needs ... instead of just satiating my ego ...

If you are ... or want to be ... an affiliate marketer, please send me your questions; or tell me what sources or resources you need to build your affiliate marketing business.

If you employ affiliates to sell your products, give me any thoughts you want to share. -- Tell me what you would like your affiliates to know or do to increase their sales; and yours.

Just send your questions, comments, thoughts; whatever, to ...

mailto:?Subject=AffMrktng

Believe it or don't ... I ain't a mind-reader. -- If'n you doesn't tell me what you need, I may never touch upon the information, sources or resources you need to be a successful,  profitable  affiliate marketer.

I won't be able to answer your questions individually but will use your input to make my "how to make  money as an affiliate marketer" responsive to your needs.

Thank You.

Now, let's do some ...

Questions & Answers, Comments & Other Good Stuff!

Roy Oswick wanted  to know ...

"I have not written before, but, I have noted all of the advice that you have given to so many. -- I am in the process of attempting to start up my own business in Close Protection for VIP's in the United Kingdom and Europe. -- I have all of the knowledge and experience for this project, BUT, I do not know where to link up with prospective clients. Any suggestions? -- Great stuff that you produce."

Roy:

If I were doing it, I would put together a sales letter & brochure for the services ... then ... I would get it into the hands of the "talent agents." -- The VIPs never select services like that for themselves.

Do a search on "talent agents" to find your prospects.

By the way, if any of you readers need ... or know of anyone who might need ... Roy's services, contact him for all the skinny.

Gila Sery needed help on a project ...

"In regards to finders fees I had bought from you last year I have a question. My question is ... when contacting the person (buyer) in my first letter to let them know I have a contact that I believe is capable of providing them with what they want, can I ask them the quantity of the product they want? -- Because I have qualified a few sellers, but the prices are much better the more that they buy. And the advertisement I read for the buyer looking to buy these products just said they need an ongoing supply of them every month. Is it ok to explain I have several contacts, but must know their average monthly quantity?"

Gila:

Yes ... you got it ... just tell them you have a number of sources and ask about their requirements.

Wanna buy the Brooklyn Bridge?

Believe it or don't ... I know the man who actually did sell the Brooklyn Bridge (legally) back in 1983.

You can read the story of how he did it here ...

http://tinyurl.com/f4k4

This is one man you really need to know if you want to succeed in marketing.

Don Aronson was trying to figure out the best advertising ...

"I have a site which is directed to dentists and contains a solutions to a problem many dentists have (I'm a retired dentist). -- I've tried Overture with zero results except to burn up $50. -- I then decided that many dentists don't spend much time, if any at all, on the Internet, so I took out a small classified ad in a dental magazine with a subscription list of approximately 115,000 subscribers.  My ad drew ZERO replies (it was for a free report from an autoresponder).  The response has been an outstanding ZERO.  The only result of that ad was the cost of the ad ($80.00). --  Now, with a negative $130 in that project, I'm about to drop the whole thing. -- I have been on the Internet trying to market different things for three years now with not much success.  I've tried so many programs and affiliate programs that I'm really getting tired of it all.   At one time I had a newsletter, but with all the disinterest in most readers and the pseudo spam blockers (all of my subscribers were subscribers of record) that seemed to be a waste of time, so away it went! -- My final thoughts are (1.)  There are too many marketers of Internet Marketing products, and those that have succeeded seem to "feed" each other!. (2.)   Niche markets are possibly terrific, but perhaps some of them are too small or two hard to get to. -- Your opinions please."

Don:

If I were doing it ... I would have an ezine for the Dentists ... then, instead of advertising on the Internet, I would put out a
postcard like this ...

Doctor,

Now's The Time To Find Out What They Didn't Teach You In Dental School.

(URL to sign up for the FREE ezine)

This way, you can pinpoint market directly to the dentists.  The page for your free ezine should be a sizzler ... sell the hell out of the FREE newsletter (wouldn't call it an ezine) on that page.  Use tidbits from your course as the subject matter of your ezine.

NOTE:  Just noticed that you do offer a FREE report.  You can use it instead of an ezine.  Just put up a page on your website that "sells" the FREE report.

Going offline would be the best because, as you have learned, dentists don't usually go online to fill teeth.

DO NOT try to market your course in your postcards ... or any other ads ... just give them a URL for a FREE something
(report, ezine, whatever) ... build your list ... email them frequently.

You can mail 100 postcard per week ... to names & address you can glean from telephone book Yellow Pages.

Also, I'll bet you are a member of some kind of Dental Association.  They usually provide their members with a directory of members. -- Mail those names & addresses.

Hey ... back when I started, I mailed 10 pieces per day until the profits allowed me to mail 25 pieces per day ... then 100 per day ... then 1,000 per day.  By 1991, I was mailing 5 Million pieces per month.

If you want to succeed, you gotta do what you can as you can.  It would be great to send out 100,000 postcards day one - but - your ad might not pull.  So, by mailing just 100 per week, you have a chance to test your ads until you find the ones that pull the most response.

Kelvin Saline didn't know who to ask ...

"I am a semi-professional magician/ventriloquist with 30+ years of performing experience.  Recently I happened upon a terrific, dynamic motivational presentation that I can deliver most effectively using my magic as a visual aid. The presentation teaches people about goal achievement and time management. -- My performing style is a natural fit with high school and college aged audiences.  I plan to market my presentation to high schools and colleges within a 200 mile radius of Duluth, Minnesota. -- Since your experience includes the entertainment field, I ask you this "how to" question:  How can I market my presentation to schools and colleges to create enough bookings to create $5,000 in income THIS FALL?"

Kelvin:

In order to get your program to the schools, your best bet is to approach the local school boards ... there is one in each school district (some elected; some appointed).  Tell them about your program & be prepared to give the program for them

For the colleges, contact the "administration" with the same spiel.

By the way, after you have your program in front of a number of school classes, have it video taped ... then, send that video tape to the Fortune 500 companies.  Most of them have continuing management programs for their mid-level executives ... they sometimes pay thousands of dollars for good presentations. -- OR ... you might want to sell the video tape itself.

Anony Mouse wanted to know how ...

"I enjoy reading your Business Lyceum e-Letter every month.  I appreciate the fact that you help people with sound advice issue after issue. -- I'm in the following situation, and I'm wondering if you can give some ideas. -- I'm working at a 9-5 job.  My wife has an afternoon job.  As you can see we are limited in time regarding starting our own business.  However I do want to start a home based business which my wife can run in her spare time and I can help weekends etc. -- I even got myself a legal name and tax id and business account. -- My idea is to get catalogues (from drop shippers or the like) where I can then identify products which I think I can sell. -- Three questions: (1.)  Can you recommend any drop shippers?  I hear that many drop  shippers are just middlemen to other middlemen, which means I can't get such a great price on the products myself.  I'm looking for drop shippers who are either the manufacturers themselves, or wholesalers who also drop ship.  (2.)  Can you offer any advice how to identify products to sell?   (3.)  Can you offer advice how to sell products that Walmart and Staples aren't selling?  And even if they are selling them ,what can I do to get customers to come to me?"

Mouse:

There are all kinds of drop ship directories on the market - but - you really don't need any of them.

Most companies that manufacture, produce or distribute products wholesale have drop ship dealers selling their products.

First ... find a product (any product) that you want to sell.  Buy one.  Get the name & address of the manufacturer, producer or distributor from the packaging. -- Contact them.  Plainly & simply ASK them if they have a drop ship program.  If they do, they will give you all the info you need to start ... use their ads, or create your own.

If a manufacturer, producer or distributor says they don't have a drop ship program - or, if they just don't respond - move on ... search around.  In this country, if there is one company making or distributing a product, there are least a dozen more; all you have to do is find one that has a drop ship program.

Yes ... you can sell the same products offered by the BIG boys.  After all, they have to buy from the very same sources of supply - and - as a drop ship dealer, you can offer your customers part of your commission as a discount to cut the BIG boy's prices ... if you really think you need to.

Marc Cowart asked ...

"My partner and I are starting a direct mail coupon book and are going to be selling ads to local businesses.  We don't have much startup capital, which is OK, since we don't have to pay for printing or postage until we have the ad revenues in hand.  However, we have encountered some resistance from business owners who don't want to advertise until they see a sample issue of the publication.  Of course, we won't have a sample issue until we sell the ads.  Classic Catch 22. -- Any words of wisdom on overcoming this objection?"

Marc:

That's easy ... just go to your printer & have him make a mock-up of the final product with blank spaces where the ads will be.  Show that to the merchants.

That's the way I did the same thing 35 years ago.

Anony Mouse II wrote ...

"I just ran across your website and I have found it to have good information.  I have a question about getting start-up capital.  I want to buy a small business -- Pizza place, BBQ place, or Liquor store.  I am terribly in debt, horrible credit, have no collateral or savings (due to an error in judgment about my purpose in life).  I have experience in the operation of these businesses but have never been an owner.  Do you have any suggestions about how to get some start-up capital?  And of course the rest of the money.   I'm thinking with 30% down and a good business with growth possibilities the rest should be obtainable."

Mouse:

With bad credit & no collateral or savings, you are faced with an almost impossible task.

First, you need to get started on cleaning up your credit.  To that end, I highly recommend my report on Debt Consolidation, at: -- it will get you started in the right direction.  That report is far more than the title implies ... it actually teaches you how to use the money you now have to restructure your finances to achieve stability - and - at only $10 it is far, far cheaper than any of those Credit Repair services.

There is a way you might be able to take over a going business ...

First, find the kind of business you want that is for sale.  Statistically, less than 10% of those businesses ever get sold, they just close up.

Contact the owner.  Tell him about wanting to buy his business and explain to him your situation.  Then, offer to work "with" him in the business and slowly but surely take over his responsibilities so he can go do what he wants to do (in 90% of the cases, that's why he/she wants to sell the business anyway).

At some point in time; agreeable to him, you will take over completely & pay him from the proceeds of the business.

Of course, you better have a plan to expand the business before you take on the responsibility - but - don't initiate that plan until it is time for you to take over.  If you initiate your plan for expansion of the business before you take over, the owner may be reluctant to let you take over.

If the owner agrees, write it down so both of you know what will be done ... when, how, by whom, etc. ... both of you sign it.

That plan of action has worked more times than I can remember.

Remember, less than 10% of small businesses ever get sold ... they just close up.  So, if the owner isn't ready for your deal when you first talk to him/her ... give it a couple months & try again.  By then, the owner will have realized that the business will probably never sell.

John Schulte - President and Chairman  of the National Mail Order Association - asked me to tell you ...

"I am a subscriber to your newsletter and have purchased some of your books.  I have enjoyed them all and continue to enjoy the newsletter.  I would like to share a product that I have discovered that has been a blessing to my wife and I. -- First, I'll share a little about what my wife has to say about these products.

"When I became pregnant with my last child, three years ago, I developed severe PMS, insomnia, fatigue and depression. I was at my wits end. I tried several products on the market until I started using 2Enhance.  Not only am I feeling great, my skin looks great and I am having a blast sharing FemOne products with women and empowering them to successfully improve their health and achieve their financial goals."

Other formulas include supplements for building strong bones, and vitamin and mineral supplements.  These products are great and I use them as well."

Thank You, Ron ...

Can you stump the old master? -- Betcha can't!

Over the past 40 years (man and boy), I have made bundles of money in direct selling, service contracting, wholesale merchandising, entertainment (I was a professional Trumpet player, vocalist & Radio Announcer), freight forwarding, import/export, retail merchandising, warehousing, real estate, electronics manufacturing, finder's fees, closeout merchandising, financial brokerage, business consulting, steel fabrication, gold and coal mining, offshore banking, mailorder, writing, and publishing. -- That being the case ...

No matter what business you're in ... whether you're just starting, well on your way, or at the top of the heap ... I've probably been where you are, done what you are doing. -- So ...

Anytime you have a question about 'how' to do something in your business - or - if you have any comments about anything I've said in issues of this e-Letter; or if you want to add your 2 cents worth ... just "ask" me or "tell" me.

Send your Questions, Comments or 2 Cents Worth to ...

with "Question" - "Comment" - or, "2 Cents Worth" in the SUBJECT.

If I, personally, don't have an answer to any question you may ask, I will contact some of the professionals in your field of endeavor (I will probably know one or more personally) to get the real 'skinny' for you.

Note: If you want to ask a question anonymously just tell me so when you send in the question. -- Nobody but you and I will know who asked the question.
