Greetings & Salutations:
How often have you heard it said ...
If you were going to work in a Machine Shop, you would, of necessity, learn to operate the metal lathes, rolls, press breaks and cutters. The "machines" you MUST operate to fulfill your job functions - but ...
As hard as it is to believe, the great majority of people who want to make money on the Internet spend very little time learning to use the one "machine" necessary to their job ... their Computer.
When I started on the Internet, I was just about as computer literate as my ol'yella cat. Today, I know a little more than the cat does - but - I am forever learning - and - teaching an old dog (like me) new tricks is never easy.
Every time I hear or read about something someone else is doing on their computer ... something I think will enhance my business efforts ... I get out my computer operation manuals to see if there is anything in them about how to do it.
Whether there is anything in the manuals or not, I also search the Internet for information about "how" it is done ... "how" I can do it on my computer. Then, I have to decide whether or not I need to know how to do it in my business. -- Even when I decide I don't need to know how to do it, I keep my notes so, if I ever do need to know how, I can retrace my steps and learn what I need to know.
It really doesn't matter whether you are using a 10 year old, second-hand computer, or a state-of-the-art monster with all the bells and whistles, you MUST know what your "machine" can do ... and "how" you can do it.

Shahid Khatai wanted to know ... "I have a question for which I need your valuable advice. -- I own the site at ... http://www.khataisons.com. -- It deals with Indian Handicrafts, Carpets, Jewelry, Rosewood Items, Shawls and other Gift items. I had quite good sales online in the last few years but really think I could get more sales and Customers online. -- How would you advice me to increase my site sales online? -- Is there any online markets you know where I can post my site Items, to reach a large number of Buyers?" Shahid: You are making the same mistake made by most Internet marketers ... you are trying to do everything on the Internet. Although I do considerable Internet marketing, over 70% of my "buyers" still come from my offline advertising. Looking at your website, I see you offer a wide variety of delightful products ... products that would sell to the upper class buyers in the U.S. - but ... You don't have any prices listed. So, how can you sell it if they potential buyer doesn't know how much it costs?? -- If I were doing it, I would list the "retail" price with shipping costs; then, have a "price list" page for wholesale buyers (password protected, so only authorized dealers could log in to the wholesale prices). Beyond that ... you should have your full company name, mailing address, telephone #, FAX #, and email address on each page ... so the customer can contact you. If I were doing it, I would run ads in publications directed to upscale Gift Shops ... offering a free dealer set up (password), so the dealer could buy wholesale for resale. The secret to really big profits on the Internet is to "find your potential customers offline" and bring them online to your site.

I always know I am going to learn something new from you, so never wait to read your latest. -- Here are my questions: I know the only way to determine effectiveness of a sales letter is to test, but what is considered a good conversion rate and how many numbers do you need to have for an accurate test?" Rod: You've been reading the stuff put out by the college boys again. Conversion rates don't mean a thing ... it is ONLY the $$profits$$ that count. If you only get .03% conversion (like Harvey Brody did many years ago) - but - that .03% produces thousands of dollars in profits, what does the conversion rate mean?? Using the "profits" as a guideline ... rather than a conversion percentage ... as few as 100 pieces can give you a fairly accurate test.

Jim Porter, Sr. asked ... "Does the Googlewords concept work and earn money? -- Is anybody really making money doing internet surveys for pay? I get solicitations all the time for the ones with $37.97 payments to join. When I found out that my affiliates were already using the words I would have used, I checked those affiliates records. -- Some of them are getting some hits - but - none of them are doing enough to justify the cost. I haven't investigated the survey deals - but - it appears to me the cost far outweighs the possible returns.

Mailorder is still King! You can still make a fortune in mailorder without ever selling anything on the Internet - BUT ... You can NOT make any real money on the Internet without using Mailorder Marketing. Starting in September, 1999, I put my web site URL on every mailorder sales piece that left our offices. -- That little act alone produced 83% of the "buying" customers who have visited my web site. On the Internet, your customers have to FIND YOU. -- That means you must continually market your web site ... using every trick in the guru's book ... to generate traffic to your site. -- Even then, all you're doing is preaching to the choir. Using known demographic profiling, in the mailorder business, you FIND YOUR CUSTOMERS ... then, tell them what you have and how they can get it from you on the Internet. People who visit, or contact, you from a mailorder campaign are NOT the customary Internet Surfers; other Internet Marketers; or Freebie Seekers, you get by marketing on the Internet. -- They are people who are looking for what you have but don't know where to find it. If you plan on making an Internet fortune ... using tried and proven mailorder methods ... you MUST be a member of the "National Mail Order Association." (I am.) Find out all about it, at: NMOA The benefits of membership are beyond belief. While you are there, be sure to visit the Mail Order Museum ... in the links on the left hand side of the page.

Andrew was wondering ... "What's the idea of lots of multiple emails that are identical? -- Re: Get it free ... sell it for a ton of money! -- Joint Ventures ... Joint Ventures ... Joint Ventures ... -- Are you in jeopardy?? -- Have you ever been strapped for cash? -- Do you know anyone who "sells" anything? -- Pure, unadulterated Horse Manure! -- Are just some examples. -- Interested to know about the psychology." Andrew: There isn't any "psychology" involved. Having spent over 30 years in mailorder (direct marketing), I know for a fact that if I mail a piece to 1,000 people and get 15 sales, there are 985 people on that list that didn't buy ... which means I need to mail the list again and again and again to get to all of those people on the list. People buy for different reasons ... at different times of the week, month, year. Their plans change; what didn't interest then yesterday is of great importance to them today. Or, they meant to buy the product but decided to wait; then lost the sales piece. It isn't psychology ... it is a matter of bringing the products to the customers at a time when they are ready to buy and nobody knows when that might be. Only a gross amateur; or a fool, makes one mailing, one time, to one list, and expects to build a business. Those who say differently only say it because they are afraid to offer their products more than once to anyone. -- That won't happen when you ONLY offer good, reliable products that do what those products are intended to do.

Thomas Brownsword was puzzled ... "What's the difference between internet marketing and direct response marketing? I heard the term "direct response marketing" for the first time this past week -- but I've heard it mentioned twice, so either people are starting to talk about it or my subconscious mind has somehow picked up on it as something important. -- Do you have any resources that could explain just what this is? -- I want to learn more so I can see if it's something I'm willing to try to exploit." Tom: "Direct Response Marketing" was first used as an euphemism for "mail order" ... it was used so people wouldn't have to say they were in a mailorder business. The term has slowly expanded over the years to include Internet marketing ... telephone marketing ... catalog marketing ... almost anything where the "ad," "sales spiel" or "sales copy" is prepared to produce direct sales from the ad. It has even been used to designate "door to door" sales presentations.

EliaHu needed to know ... "I have a large list of chemical formulas of real mass production products like: Real tooth paste , adhesives paints, cosmetics and so forth. -- Those formulas are tried and true. -- How can I sell them by mail order? -- How can I price them? -- For instance how should I price a real formula for a real adhesive?" EliaHu: Do a search for "tooth paste formulas," "adhesive formulas" etc., on the Internet. Also, go to Amazon.com and search for books of formulas. See how those formulas and formula books are being sold and for how much.

Frank Rodriguez wanted to tell me ... "I hope this e-mail finds you in good health and spirits. I have a question for you: By any chance, has anyone on your mailing list told you that your e-mails automatically go into their spam folder? -- I have a spam filter set up on my yahoo account, and every time I get an e-mail from you, it goes into my spam folder and every time I check your e-mail address as being "Not Spam", but the next time you write, I find your e-mail in the spam folder again! This has been going on for months. I use yahoo because I don't feel comfortable using Microsoft Outlook with all of the viruses going around, but I look forward to your e-mails and will probably need to find an alternative address to receive them." Frank: Last week, one of my readers asked me a very important question about a specific business deal in which he was involved. -- I answered with specifics about doing the deal. -- My answer came back labeled Spam. If you are in business; doing business, you can NOT afford to have any kind of filtering on your email account. -- Why? -- Because even the best of the filters can't tell real business email from spam ... the words are the same.

How's this for the opening line of a book... "I started in mail order with less than $100 and made millions with classified ads." Sounds like one of those 'bullstuff' ads on TeeVee, doesn't it - but - in this case it is the honest-to-goodness truth & nothing but the whole truth. I've known the man who wrote that opening line for longer than I care to remember. Melvin Powers has made, does make, and will continue to make millions of dollars from his classified ad campaigns ... running literally thousands of classified ads every month. Unfortunately, right now, over 90% of the 'how-to' information on the market today, about making money in mailorder, is pure, unadulterated bullstuff (you know what I mean). Most of it written by people who simply tell you how to do it from books they have read ... they've never really done it themselves. In his book, "Making Money with Classified Ads," Melvin Powers tells you how it's done and how you can do it from his years & years of real experience ... not taken from somebody else's book ... no b.s. If you've ever wondered how fortunes are made with classified ads, here's your chance to learn from a true master of the art ... someone who does it every day. ó "Making Money with Classified Ads" is truly a masterpiece, written by a real master. Order your personal copy, today ... it's only $23 ($20 + $3 s&h). Learn the real truth about making money with classified ads. ó Tell Mel that ol'Jim sended ya. Thoughts For The Month! "There is a great difference between knowing and understanding: you can know a lot about something and not really understand it." -- Charles F. Kettering "The world is not to be put in order, the world is order incarnate. It is for us to put ourselves in unison with this order." -- Henry Miller

Can you stump the old master? -- Betcha can't! Over the past 40 years (man and boy), I have made bundles of money in direct selling, service contracting, wholesale merchandising, entertainment (I was a professional Trumpet player, vocalist & Radio Announcer), freight forwarding, import/export, retail merchandising, warehousing, real estate, electronics manufacturing, finder's fees, closeout merchandising, financial brokerage, business consulting, steel fabrication, gold and coal mining, offshore banking, mailorder, writing, and publishing. -- That being the case ... No matter what business you're in ... whether you're just starting, well on your way, or at the top of the heap ... I've probably been where you are, done what you are doing. -- So ... Anytime you have a question about 'how' to do something in your business - or - if you have any comments about anything I've said in issues of this e-Letter; or if you want to add your 2 cents worth ... just "ask" me or "tell" me. Send your Questions, Comments or 2 Cents Worth to ... with "Question" - "Comment" - or, "2 Cents Worth" in the SUBJECT. If I, personally, don't have an answer to any question you may ask, I will contact some of the professionals in your field of endeavor (I will probably know one or more personally) to get the real 'skinny' for you. Note: If you want to ask a question anonymously just tell me so when you send in the question. -- Nobody but you and I will know who asked the question.
